What is Tetanus?

Tetanus is a disease caused by a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani.  This bacteria is found as spores in the soil, dust or manure and can enter the body through skin wounds, burns, and punctures.  An infection leads to painful muscle contractions that begin in the jaw or neck, often referred to as “lockjaw”.  Symptoms appear slowly within 14 days of exposure.

Whether you travel or not, you should receive a tetanus vaccine dose every 10 years.

Prevention

Vaccine names: Adacel, Adacel-Polio, Boostrix, Boostrix-Polio

Minimum age: 4 years

Primary series: Children receive 4-6 dose series with routine immunization programs. Adults not previously immunized receive at least 3 doses.

Boosters: Every 10 years
